La idea de que todo lo importante se debe aprender en la escuela es muy nueva. Hasta hace poco, la mayoría de la gente comprendía muy bien que, si bien algunas cosas se podían aprender mejor en la escuela, otras se podían aprender igual o mejor fuera de ella, y muchas definitivamente no se podían aprender en la escuela. Se habrían reído de la idea de que todo el conocimiento y la sabiduría se pueden encontrar o poner en las aulas y en los libros. Incluso ahora, la mayoría de las personas que piensan que todo debe aprenderse en la escuela no aprendieron allí la mayor parte de lo que saben.
En mi caso, no solo no aprendí en la escuela la mayor parte de lo que sé, sino que no lo aprendí en lo que la gente llama “situaciones de aprendizaje”, es decir, experiencias en las que entras para aprender algo. Yo no hago ninguna de las actividades que hago “para aprender algo”. He aprendido mucho sobre música y cómo hacer música asistiendo a ensayos y conciertos. Pero no voy a ellos para “aprender” sobre la música, sino porque amo lo que veo y escucho allí. En mis breves visitas a otros países o a otras partes de mi país, he aprendido muchas cosas sobre esos lugares. Pero no fui allí “para aprender”, sino para ver gente y hacer cosas.
En el último año o dos he trabajado con otras personas de mi ciudad natal, Boston, para anular o al menos retrasar un supuesto proyecto de desarrollo urbano, que en realidad era un fraude. A través de esa experiencia he aprendido mucho sobre las leyes, la política y la economía de la ciudad, y sobre el funcionamiento de los gobiernos estatales y municipales. Pero no me involucré en ese trabajo para aprender todo esto, sino para tratar de evitar que mi ciudad fuera robada y arruinada. Leo muchas revistas y libros, no para “aprender” lo que contienen, sino porque creo que pueden ser interesantes, útiles o emocionantes. De vez en cuando puedo leer para averiguar algo, pero si aprendo, es decir, si recuerdo lo que leí, depende de si ese texto me ayuda a hacer mi trabajo y a vivir mi vida y disfrutarla.
The idea that everything important must be learned in school is very new. Until quite recently, most people understood very well that while some things might be learned best in school, others could be learned as well or better out of school, and many could not be learned in school at all. They would have laughed at the idea that all knowledge and wisdom could be found or put in classrooms and books. Even now, most of the people who think everything must be learned in school did not themselves learn there most of what they know. Not only did I not learn in school most of what I know, but I did not learn it in what people call “learning situations,” that is, from experiences that I went into in order to learn something. I do not do any of the things I do “in order to learn something.” I have learned much about music and music-making by going to rehearsals and concerts. But I do not go to them to “learn about” music, but because I love what I see and hear there. In my short visits to other countries, or other parts of my own country, I have learned many things about those places. But I did not go there “to learn,” but to see people and do things. In the last year or two I have done some work with other citizens in my home town of Boston to defeat or at least delay a bad and crooked so-called urban-development scheme. From this I have learned much about the law, politics, and economics of the city, and about the workings of the state and city governments. But I did not go into the work to learn all this, but to try to prevent my city from being robbed and ruined. I read many magazines and books, not to “learn” what is in them, but because I think they may be interesting, or helpful, or exciting. I may now and then read to find out something, but whether I learn, i.e., remember it, depends on whether it helps me to do my work and live and enjoy my life.
